When Our Stories Crossed Borders

When Our Stories Crossed Borders

A Reflection on Bringing Bentala to Fragrance of Asia, Kuala Lumpur

There is something quietly humbling about watching someone experience your fragrance for the very first time.

At Fragrance of Asia 2026 in Kuala Lumpur, those moments happened again and again. Conversations often began with curiosity, unfolded into stories, and ended with someone discovering a place in Indonesia through scent.

For three days at Sentul Depot, Bentala stood alongside more than fifty fragrance houses from across Southeast Asia—bringing together independent perfume brands from Indonesia, Malaysia, Thailand, and the Philippines. Among them were fellow finalists of the Asia Perfume Awards, each sharing a different perspective on what fragrance can become.

For us, this journey was never simply about exhibiting perfumes.

It was about discovering whether stories rooted in Indonesia could resonate beyond home.

They did.

One visitor described the experience in a way we will never forget:

"Bali zen in KL... an escape to a quiet beach or the peaks of mystical mountains."

Perhaps that is the greatest compliment we could receive—not that our fragrances smelled beautiful, but that they transported someone somewhere meaningful.

Sharing Bali Through Scent

Every detail of our booth was designed with intention.

Rather than simply displaying bottles, we wanted visitors to experience the landscapes that inspired each fragrance.

Beside Ocean Vista, fresh citrus, green foliage, and weathered stones echoed the spirit of Kelingking Beach. Bright notes of lemon and bergamot gave way to aromatic herbs and warm woods, inviting visitors to imagine standing where the sea meets the horizon.

Across the table, Sacred Summit rested among moss, star anise, and violet blooms—a quiet tribute to Mount Agung. The space encouraged people to pause, breathe deeply, and experience a fragrance inspired by stillness, reflection, and inner strength.

More than once, we watched visitors close their eyes before speaking.

Those silent moments reminded us that fragrance often communicates before words ever can.

Recognition Along the Journey

One of the most meaningful milestones of the exhibition was witnessing how warmly our fragrances were received by the Malaysian community.

As a young Indonesian fragrance house, this appreciation was more than an award. It affirmed our belief that stories inspired by Indonesia's landscapes, culture, and personal journeys can resonate far beyond where they begin.

Yet one of the biggest surprises came from something that had not even been released.

In a small corner of our booth sat a quiet preview of our upcoming fragrance, inspired by Bali's floral offering, Canang Sari.

Its response exceeded every expectation.

Visitors returned to smell it again. Conversations lingered. Curiosity grew.

One visitor even left us with a message we couldn't help but smile at:

"Tolong CANANG SARI-NYA SEGERA RELEASE!" (Please release CANANG SARI immediately!)

That enthusiasm became one of the greatest gifts we brought home.

More Than an Exhibition

Looking back, what stays with us most isn't the award, the exhibition hall, or even the fragrances themselves.

It is the people.

The conversations that wandered beyond perfume. The memories visitors shared. The stories of home, family, mountains, oceans, and places they longed to return to.

One of the most memorable discoveries was the quiet cultural connection between Indonesia and Malaysia. Throughout the exhibition, we kept hearing the same joyful reaction:

"Wah, sedap!"

In Indonesia, sedap is a word we most often associate with delicious food. In Malaysia, hearing it used to describe a fragrance was both unexpected and deeply endearing. Before long, it became one of the expressions we looked forward to hearing most.

Moments like these reminded us that fragrance has a remarkable way of opening conversations that might never have happened otherwise.

That has always been the reason Bentala exists.

Not simply to create fragrance, but to create moments of connection—to places, to memories, and to the people we are continually becoming.

Until We Meet Again

To everyone who visited us at Fragrance of Asia, thank you.

Thank you for your curiosity, your generosity, and for welcoming an Indonesian fragrance house with such warmth.

We returned home carrying more than new opportunities.

We returned with renewed confidence that stories rooted in place can travel, connect, and find meaning beyond borders.

This is only the beginning of Bentala's journey.

And wherever the next chapter takes us, we'll continue creating fragrances inspired by the places that shape us—and the people who carry those stories forward.

Until we meet again.
